One simple question:

How do you drive your car?

How often do you red line it or drive it to the max?

How often do you execute racing style starts or put the engine under full load?

I would be interested in seing if there are any correlations with driving style or whether it is down to luck on the quality of parts and construction.

heres something for ya, not 30k tho

my car has 21k on it, registered on 53 plate, no rebuilds of any sort. at 18.5k i had the engine checked, told by automedon (ex factory workers) that my engine has the harder cams and finger followers after they changed suppliers, there was no engine wear or signs of damage,

a few of the north east crowd have seen me giving it beans sideyways and round in circles at one of the meets, i drive it quite hard once its warmed up fully in terms of putting it under load, but in the 10k iv had it i have only hit the limiter 8000rpm a couple of times, by accident when the wheels spin up, generally dont take it above 6500rpm as the peak torque is 5000 rpm, and power 6500rpm.

hope that helps

edited to add, 5 track sessions at knockhill and driven like a madman but no problems

I'd be surprised if you get any "I drive like a loony. silly Never warm her up and I thrash her like a ginger stepchild. I've have had 6 rebuilds" replies.

I agree apart from the unwarrant brandishing of the 'ginger' word

However, I'd hope that someone would say if they drove hard and had had no or loads of trouble.

What I'd really like is to set up a poll for all s^ owners past and present to enter the date of build and details of rebuilds.

I'd love to do some nerdy stats with the data.

Would people take part?

Tried to get this done via the Tamora register but it never happened.

I'd be very happy to agree to limiting access to the data to Sp6 owners only.

Not near to 30,000 yet but March 06 Tuscan 2 conv so I guess built in 05 with 18,700 on the clock and 10 track days all driven very hard. Car always warmed up with great care and used every day. I know it's only 10 months old but I had the top end checked at the 18,000 mile service by Racing Green and all is well. This car was run in up to 6,000 but since then it's often been on the rev limiter at the track (my driving, not my mates who can drive!!). I was really nervous about a switch from the old V8 to the S6 but I'm now happy it was a good move.

I think it would be better to setup a 1 page web site with a survey with check boxes etc the problem with doing this kind of thing on here is the data and thread gets hijacked with views so everything gets muddled. What you want s something like

1) Is your S6;
1999 to 2003 yes | no
2003 onwards yes | no

2) Have you had a rebuild;
yes | no

3) If yes to 2) what best decribes the issue;
a) Top end yes | no
b) Bottom end yes | no
c) Wear yes | no

4) Was your rebuild between;
a) 1999 to 2003 yes | no
b) 2003 onwards yes | no

5) Have you had another rebuild
since;
yes | no

6) If yes to 5) how many have you had;
a) One yes | no
b) Two yes | no
c) Three yes | no
more yes | no

Obviously you would include all the relevant qs eg mileages, kind of use, track days, number of owners etc etc this way you capture data and not opinion. Maybe more would take part aswell becuase it is anonymous, having said that you do not want monkeys just doing the survey just to distort the facts, but I am sure something could be done to limit that.

That would be perfect. Especially if you could add the mileage at which the events occured.

Sadly, I have no idea how to build such a gui and database

wavey I could knock together the database and a front end, not web though, would need Access 2000/XP/2003 to use it ?

Always be converted to web access later on (using same database) ...

Well my very late 2001 Cerbs done 27K now with nothing done apart from servicing. Its not beaten like a rented donkey , but I do give it bananas sometimes up to 6K (never needed to go past that). Mine has the older finger followers in it, but at the factory 14th Dec, they said they had no wear on them ,and if it aint broke -dont fix it -everything else is peachy. They said the best thing anyone can do with these, is simply use them as often as possible. No car likes to be stood for extended periods, let alone one of these.
Starts perfect - and warmed up properly etc. Treat it like a lion ,handle it right or it will bite your head clean off(and your wallet).

I could knock this together and stick this on my server - should have something up there today

That would be amazing if you would.

If we could get as many truthful answers as possible it could proove to be a very simple system for plotting improvements on the engines.

OK chaps. I have put a rudimentary survey page and db at: http://the-gopher.homeip.net/survey.a could you try it out and check the routing from the internet is working OK?

If you get a nasty error page when you try and submit data then it is most likely either because you have already submitted (it is indexed by car reg) or because you have entered non-numerics into the "Number Rebuilds" field or the "Mileage" field.

If i get a bit more time I'll put some nicer error handling on there, but tbh it is the data that is what we want, so I might spend a bit of time developing a couple of stats pages - what sorts of stats do people want to see?

Gordon worked OK, just one point may be useful to have a general comments box in there as well for any points not covered in the selection's.

Ok - added current mileage and general comments box. that's enough for tonight, i'll have a quick check on the stats tomorrow, and check on the comments here so that I can get an idea of what stats people are wanting to see.

My current thinking is that after a large sample has been collected I'll just stick the data in Excel form on a web page available for download. Then we can all use our various noggin's to analyse the data and compare results.
