Just wondering if anyone can give a definitive answer about oil temps at this time of year.
I've got to drive up to scotland tonight, and usually what i do before heading onto the motorway/a-roads is potter around until the oil is at full temperature. When you go on the motorway/a-roads and start making progress the oil temp decreases to 40 or less at this time of year. IS THIS THE ACTUAL TEMPERATURE OF THE OIL OR IS IT STILL AT FULL TEMPERATURE.
The reason i ask is, i was told by someone once that whatever oil temp is displayed is the actual oil temperature.

TIA

Copied from my reply to earlier thread;

Oil temp - cause of frequent concern, and much research by many of us/checking with factory etc. The ENGINE definitely does need to be at 70C+ before using full revs. However, the oil temp sensor reads the temp from the oil tank, in front of the engine, which is obviously cooler. In frosty conditions it may not get above 35C at all, although the engine obviously IS hot after 25 mins or so at cruising speed (if the water is at 85 or so for 10 mins before that).

So, don't worry!

Thanks! So once on the fast roads and the temp reading goes down to say 30ish, it's ok to give it some revs, cos the oil is actually hotter than this, i.e. the sensor is giving a false reading?

Yes I was told that this would be fine. Once you understand the way the system works it's common sense, but would have been ideal to have the sensor closer to the engine where it would read engine oil temp not oil tank temp. rolleyes
