At the weekend I noticed that only one of the two engine cooling fans is working. Has anyone else had this problem?

Is it going to be a 'back to the dealer' job, or could it be something simple like a blown fuse?

The fans are controlled independantly with one fan coming on at about 92deg and the second one coming on at about 96deg.

If your car is running hotter than 96/97 deg with only one fan then your right something is wrong. sorry dont know of a fix but I guess a fuse would be a good place to start.

Will check out the temp next time to see if both should be on.

There's also 2 relays (one for each fan) surprise, surprise but these are crap. They are under rated for the fan motors and the contacts arc when the the relays are switched off. This burns the contact face. Its a good idea to have a couple of spares stashed away.

I had a fan fail on me which caused overheating problems in traffic on very hot days. Dealer sorted it but the damage had been done at that point. As has been said already the fans come on independently of each other at various temperatures. Just make sure that your water is being cooled adequately and should the temp increase over 96 degrees and both fans not come on then investigate further.

a good way to check the fan circuit, is to remove both fan relays then remove another relay from another circuit you know is working. Then remove the top of the relay and place in the fan positions and manually close the relay. If the fan kicks in you know that part of the circuit is working and the problem is from the relay to the ECU.

One of mine did this - so to see if the fan was OK - I disconnected the wire connector and ran a seperate + and earth wire.. and touched the connectors.. fan worked OK.

So - as I was getting Temp faults - I have the temp sensor changed and how both my fans both work.

Temp sensor was < a year old..
