Quick oil question
Discussion
Owned my Tusc for about 5 months now and regularly check the oil, never used any untill a few weeks back when the level droped by a quarter not in a major rush i carried on driving mabe done about 70 - 80 miles went to top it up and the level had fallen to half.
I am very worried now i may have caused some damage the engine still sounds the same but i remember some years back i let a car run near dry topped it up was ok for a week then the car was no longer driveable.
Any comments advice appreciated
Regards Mark

Have you checked the undertray to see if oil is leaking onto it?
If you hold your hand over the exhaust pipes with engine running are you collecting any oil on it?
Could be oil pressure sender unit leaking (common although wouldn't expect such a dramatic drop).
If you're not checking the levels straight after killing the engine when up to temp the levels will vary dramatically as the oil drains back into the engine.
If in doubt, get it to a respected dealer/indie.

If there is still oil on the disptick you'll have done no damage. There are litres and litres of oil in the engine don't forget.
After 5 years experince of the speed 6, even measuring in the same way every time (engine hot enough for the fans to come on, checking the oil 3 or 4 times in the 2 minutes after the engine has stopped) can yield variable results. For example sometimes half a litre of oil would suddenly go missing. I've always found that not panicing and then checking the oil on another day after another journey is best before adding in any oil.
Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks for replies, dont think theres any leaks just a few tiny drops of oil from the tray no sign of any oil on the floor.
Yes i always check the oil on level ground 5 minutes after cutting the engine, dont no why its used so much all of a sudden mabe the change of weather ive noticed the oil temp getting much hotter on a sunny day.
Andy cheers mate thats basically what i needed to know... Going to check the oil after every drive if i think somethings not right ill take her in.
