When it's cold it sounds like a load of old spanners and nails in a metal bucket.. by 50 degreees oil temp fairly quite and by 60 degreees very quiet (at tickover & higher).

If you have a noise when hot then I would get it looked at IMHO.

The feelings you have are very normal. From cold they sound awful. Also there are timing chains and tappits banging and clicking around which a lot of 'normal car' engines dont have so they sound a bit different!

So you may have a problem. Why not book it in at TVR Power or Autocraft et al and find out properly? You sound like you won't enjoy the car otherwise.

My Tuscan 4.0 had a slight tick that, like yours, seemed to disappear with higher revs. Never had a problem from new and it passed three services with flying colours.

I see your in the south west - Autocraft are in Salisbury so maybe not too far - you could always go for a run out and ask them to have a listen. If not I believe Peninsula have an excellent rep if you're a bit further south.

As mentioned above, the ticking could be tappets or the timing chain (especially if it hasn't been adjusted followoing the re-build) and as they're metal on metal they can make a bit of a noise if slightly loose.

Is the ticking coming from the front of cockpit end of the engine? Does it disappear under load or is it ever present?

Is the engine still under warranty from the re-build?

Don't forget that the injectors make a ticking sound by virtue of the way they work, and at higher revs, this sound will be drowned out by exhaust / general engine noise.

Mine does the same - and when I first got the car, I used to worry too!

You are bound to be paranoid to start with - no big surprise given all the negative posts on here (as well as the usual 'pub-chat'!! )

The bottom line is - if you're that worried, get a dealer or reputable indie (or less expensively another (more experienced) owner) to have a butchers / listen.

If all is well......STOP WORRYING AND ENJOY THE CAR!! - life really is too short. Let's face it, you could get hit by a bus tomorrow!

In time you won't even hear the noises you're currently fretting about, and any that are important you will notice if (or when, if you're a 'half-empty' rather than a 'half-full' sort of guy!) the time comes.

Welcome BTW, and above all, enjoy the car, and don't believe everything you hear (or read)!!

Once you stop worrying, you won't get a bigger grin anywhere!

I went through a phase of worrying about every little tap and rattle (and there are quite a few - especially when cold) but trust me, I soon noticed when the usual became the unusual!

Treat her nice on the warm up and enjoy - I think most owners would tell you that the pleasure far outweighs any pain (and the pain is far less common than some on these here forums would have you believe)!

All the best and welcome - PH is a great place to hang around and ask questions/share experiences!

I had a ticking noise on my Cerb, yeah I know V8 not S6.
Cracked manifold, Welded up no ticking.
As others have said don't expect the worse straight away.
Nick.

Nobody's mentioned the various noises that the alternator makes as it spins around.

Unless your burning an enormous amount of oil every journey, don't worry.

Alternatively drive faster, the concentration required will take your mind off any noises & the sweat coming from your arm pits will get rid of any oily smells

ecosnige, did you get your car looked at ? as i took my car out today with the roof off and noticed that mine also has this faint 'clicking' noise (like a sewing machine) round about 1500-2000 revs.
Just wondered what the verdict was with yours ?
Not had mine long so could also just be paranoid !!

The speed 6's generally calm down with the mechanical noises once heated up, if the ticking is continuing even when hot and sounding very obtrusive, then I'd suggest you get her looked at, could just need a head service which is done every 12k i believe? but if you leave it unattended, it could lead to something worse, theres a lot of moving parts in that head, and things can go pair shaped if there is a manufacturing defect or build quality defect.

Yeah I know, the purists will say just ignore it and keep an eye on the oil/pressure and carry on like normal, but my mantra is 'get it looked at', its only a small trip and peace of mind is the result...

Hey if my heart starts ticking I think I'll be in hospital before you can count to 100, so give your P&J the same attention... the way of the old, drive it till something breaks is not the way of the new, especially with high-performance cars.
