I would say that it's not pot luck - as that implies there's a random distribution of both "good" and "bad" parts. I don't think that's necessarily the case.
As for likelihood of an S over a normal one - given that you couldn't get an S until later (Q3 2001?) there are probably less of them that'll suffer the same number of rebuilds as earlier non-S ones. But like-for-like (age wise), I wouldn't expect you to fair much differently between them.
