Oil types & Servicing.
Discussion
I am planning on servicing my speed six myself, well as much as i can. Was there a service manual produced for this engine, and if so where can i get a copy? Also what oil is being put in the engine now. i'm using the Mobil 1 0W-40. i have heard of other, thicker, oils being used. Any thoughts/recomendations. Thanks in advance. Tim
I don't know of any service manual produced for the Speed Six. As for oil types mine never liked the Mobil1 0W40, so switched to Castrol RS10W60 although I was recently informed that it is not really worth using this unless you do a lot of trackdays. For normal road use a good semi-synthetic oil such as Castrol Magintec 10W40 has been recomended.
My Tam went for an oil change a couple of weeks ago at the factory.
I think it was the very last job they did before closing down the service department for ever. They just fitted me in at the very end of the last day.
The oil they used was 5W40 fully synthetic.
The technician said 5W40 is what they now recommend to use for Speed6 engines that are run-in (past 6K miles). He said that British winters aren't cold enough anymore to require 0W40 (as recommended in the hand book).
Sorry, can't help you with brand. It seems that different people on PH have different preferences.

im just about to have my service (820 chuffing quid!) and am thinking about changing from the mobil 1 stuff too, cos its about as effective as 1950's hair balm.
ciderwithcerbie runs a 6 like mine and hes recommended i try 10w50 silkolene pro s. anyone else had any experiences with this?

I believe Al Melling recommended 20/50W for both Speed 6 and AJP8 engines at the Autocraft talk.
Mine was running 10/50W before it went off to the doctors. Switched from Mobil 1 at the last service and consumption certainly dropped with no noticeable change to performance (to my untrained eye/ear!).
