Rough running and low idle
Discussion
My engine has suddenly started running rough and idles at 500 rpm from cold. This started after I was driving the other day with aircon on and was stationary, just as I went to pull off the cooling fan kicked in and the car stalled. After that I couldn’t restart it for a couple of minutes and probably flooded it in the attempt. Now when I start it runs a bit lumpy and idles low, there is also strong smell of fuel from the exhaust. I suspect it is overfueling for some reason, maybe lamda related? I haven’t taken it out for a run since as it has been chucking it down here. Is the best thing to take it out for a run and see what happens? Could it cause any damage to drive it any distance with these problems?
Make sure all electrical connection are good and without water in them. Fuse holders and fuses should be checked for corrosion. Battery terminals are secure and tight and check the twisted connections for the loom that are hidden behind the airbox.
Oh and it could also be the coil pack starting to play up (break down). You'll start to smell fuel if the engine drops sparks on any number of cylinders.
I suffered a problem very much like you described. TVR now working fine after doing all the bits I've listed checking.
