Quieter speed six engine
Discussion
Is the Speed six engine ever quiet?
By quiet I mean free from top end noise, mine I suspect, suffers from valve guide wear, it gets louder as the temps go up.
But it makes on the nose power at 349.8 for a 3.6 (Kitsandclassics dyno), uses very little oil ,so for now it just gets driven.
I appreciate there is always going to be some chains noises etc, but does refurbing the head equal a less rattly engine?
Thoughts?

My Mk1 Tuscan sounds like fifty skeletons fornicating in an aluminium dustbin until it warms up a bit. Although after that it is never quiet and always has some timing chain rattles going on. Like you there is little or no oil used so i am living with it (the exhaust drowns a lot of it out)

Must admit mines very quiet on start up with little or no rattley valves.
Only time you can hear valve noise is when is very hot, guess the oil is at its thinnest then.
Previous one I had (that I soon returned) you could hear the valve noise bulkhead even on a motor way, and that was de catted. Most noticeable was a 1800-2100 rpm. It also burnt plenty of oil and smoked ( sir, they all do that, it's the highly tuned 4 litre engine)

The FFF is astoundingly quiet compared to regular speed six. When I took the demonstrator out earlier this year, I was given the keys to start it. I started the engine and was so stunned at how quiet it was I got back out in the rain in disbelief... leaning down over the bonnet to try and hear the usual clangers going on, but its simply not there.
You get a BMW level of noise up the front and a TVR noise out the back...
I liked it so much, Ive done this..
Like Don says the faithful may not like it... I must be one of the speed six faithless

I have just had a look at the FFF price, if you build that in as part of a DIY engine rebuild it isnt that bad.
yes, you would be up over the cost of a std rebuild at one of the indies, but most of the cost of a rebuild must be labour and the cylinder head anyway.
I very much doubt that any of the std rebuilds come in at the advertised cost... a major chunk of the time is taking the engine out and putting it back, which is pretty tedious.yes, you would be up over the cost of a std rebuild at one of the indies, but most of the cost of a rebuild must be labour and the cylinder head anyway.
Ant there always seems to be some top end noise due to the valve train set up also if your engine is producing full power and using very little oil would think the valve guides are OK as any wear would mean the valves were not seating properly and oil would be running down the guide and being burnt in the combustion chamber like the old lotus twin am did as it had no valve stem oil seals and that was with good guides
