Oil is collecting just below the oil filter. The car's recently had a 12k service and I suspect the filter has either been over tightened and damaged, or perhaps just not tight enough.

This might be a silly question, but does the oil need to be drained from the block before touching the filter? Does much oil drain out into the reservoir after the engine is turned off?

Because of the angle of the block and filter it's really hard to remove the filter without spilling oil and it running down and pooling in the casting webs. It may just be that they never cleaned the residue off the block.

My suggestion is degrease and monitor, if it stops you don't have a problem. If it doesn't and you need to remove the filter there is no need to drain any oil from the engine, but be aware that a small amount will come out of the filter when removed.

Thanks for the reply. I'll clean it up and keep and eye on it.

Come to think of it, the oil is a bit dirty looking, and considering it should be fresh oil then fingers crossed it is just spill from when the filter was changed.
