Got a feeling the Starter is on the way out on my Cerbera. They have been a couple of times when you can here it click and a slight turn of the engine before nothing. Another press and it starts fine. Don't think its the battery as it spins on the starter fine when it goes.

Anyone changed one before, should be an easy job in therory but though I would check first to see if anyone has any experience.

My S6 cerb does the same, only very occasionally, but when warm I get the dreaded click.

I believe there are two types of starter fitted to a S6, the early type which is the same as an AJP and the later BMW item. Mine is the later type.

I pulled the starter and cleaned up all the contacts and bushes etc to see if it would help starting. It didn't, so I assume the solenoid or motor is on its way out. I'm lead to believe the high temps generated by the engine fry the starters after a few years. I guess only occasional use doesn’t help.

Getting it out took about half and hour, access was good with no real headaches I can think off. Three M10 bolts IIRC.

F.Y.I. the later starter is a 1.7Kw unit from an early 90’s BMW 5 series (larger engined M5, 535i etc), not the smaller identical 1.4Kw starter from a 3 series.

I’m just weighing up whether to go for an aftermarket replacement at around £70, or a replacement OEM unit for around £200.

Hope this helps.

Access from above I assume? Its below the airbox facing rearward I believe but haven't looked yet.

My service history shows it was removed and cleaned by STR8Six in 2011 so might have been done to get some more life out of it.

Yep,in from the top once the air box is off.

If it's not been done recently, it's also worth changing the 100A fuse when your doing the job.

Having not long gone through this I would do what has been suggested.Clean the earths as it is eeasy enough to do,&the fuse to 125.I struggled to get a replacement for mine at the time so went for Powers uprated one.Wasnt really anything wrong with mine but having a new engine rebuild & had months & months of delays I wanted to eliminate problems before they arose.

Cool thats a good idea.

Of course the next question is anyone have a quick guide to where the earths are?

Main engine earth is at drivers side engine mount. Access via O/S wheel arch

Guess the front lights/instruments is the one at the front on chassis x-member(?) fairly obvious - several fairly light gauge black wires to single bolt.

Probably one at back too??!! Guess the main engine earth is the first to attack though.
