How easy is it to change an engine mount? Near side I suspect.

I have a knocking noise from the front of the car but I have checked the bushes and they seem ok, They were only changed on the front maybe 7,000 miles ago.

I suspect it's an engine mount but I have had a look under the car, removed the chassis plates and it looks a right ball ache to get to. But before I start how would you tell if an engine mount was worn as it is very difficult to see it in the space available.

Or should I just take it to a garage and let them do it, what would it cost for a front engine mount to be changed!!

Picture is taken from below the engine mount looking up.

looks to me like it needs replaced and was probably the cause of the knocking noise.

I have to say it looks like a nightmare to remove and replace. I am sure I have read on here that you have to remove the offside engine mount first then detach the nearside engine mount. Next, push the engine over to the offside to allow the removal of the old mount and then the fitting of the new one.

If there is a better way let me know.

You are correct in the method. I have done one. By the trackside at Zolder. It was a real Alan B'stard.

Probably easier on a ramp. You need to cut down the threads on the new mount by at least 10mm. That helps in getting it in. Take all the air intake system off. Also wedge the engine over with real gusto, but watch out for the lambda sensors. Also helps if you can take off the rear undertray and the heat shielding.

Thanks Alistair.

I just checked the mount on the offside and it looks the same as the one on the nearside in the picture I posted above.

Can anyone confirm that the mount looks worn!!

I would hate to change it to find that I still have the clonking noise. The noise did sound like metal against metal but I have had a good check and everything looks ok.

The knocking noise was obvious when going over bumps and also when I was stationery reving the car, but when I raised the front end to have look and reved the car the noise was not evident.

You could open bonnet and push/pull the engine left/right to see if it has any movement on the mounts. You might then locate the clonking noise.... Mine were separating like yours and I could feel some movement on them. Replaced both last winter with new from Power, and it really stiffened up the engine installation.

be careful, I did mine at it moved the engine up slightly, what I didn't know is that the bonnet was rubbing on the airbox and it has put a slight egg on my bonnet.the air box can be adjusted down at the front

They'd been flagged up two years running as an advisory to watch out for during servicing, as they were starting to split like yours.

Hi, I had my mount changed again yesterday after it lasted only about 300 miles. It was one of a bad batch produced around June. It melted.

Symptom is a rattle when cold, and knocking sounds when going over a bump, like garage door rails or sharp speed bumps.
The noise comes from an oil pipe and/or the cat hitting the undertray.
Both pipe and cat sit above cutouts in the undertray, the pipe is ahead of the cat. When the engine drops the pipe rubs on the sharp edge of the cutout.
Dont panic, but don't leave it too long, or else it will eventually rub through as demonstrated by someone here who posted a picture of said oil pipe with a hole in it.
Probably a good idea to enlarge the hole to prevent catastrophic damage?

Its easy to diagnose with certainty if you extend your arm under there (cat and ahead of cat) and take pics with your phone.

SergSC, thank you for your reply, the symptoms you mention are similar to what I have been experiencing with the knocking noise.

Today I removed the bolts from both engine mounts , the mounts are still on the car at the moment as I can't see how on earth you get them out. Do I have to remove the bracket that goes from the engine to the engine mount on the offside? To allow me to get the engine mount out.

If anyone has a step by step guide on what to do once the bolts have been removed that would be really usefull.
