I'm thinking of getting a TVR with the infamous Speed 6 engine and am told that the engine is more fallible in the Mk1 Tuscan than the Mk2.

Having had a problems with a Super-charged Chim engine I'm obviously trying to avoid (as much as possible) having big engine rebuild bills all over again so...in order to weigh up the pros and cons I wonder if you chaps could give me your best estimate for the odds that any Speed 6 engine will 'drop dead' and need a rebuild within say 50,000 miles of me buying it.

On average is it almost certain to happen, 50-50 or perhaps every 1 in 5 will suffer this curse.

I know there are many variables and I'm talking about buying a car that hasn't had the rebuild done so lets say this one for example: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/t...

Low mileage 16k, Mk1. I'm not actually thinking of that car but certainly one of that age and with perhaps 30k on the clock.

Thanks in advance for any guesses/estimates you can tender...

TVR Power and Str8six rebuilt speed six engined cars very very very reliable and thats why they give great warrantys with them.

If it hasn't had a rebuild it will most likley need one at some point but impossible to tell you when it will need it if at all. My 2003 SP6 Cerb went pop at 30k miles ish.

It is wildley agreed that 2005 engined cars were built with better parts and have been more reliable.

But buy a car wiht a rebuild by one of the above and take away the worry!!

So, for example, this one:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/t...

...with it's "Top End Rebuild" would be considered almost bullet proof from that point of view provided the rebuild was done by one the recognised garages?

It doesn't have to be a Full Rebuild as all of the fallible components are Top End?

There are also more than two companies out there offering 5 year warranties and great engines. In fact neither of the two companies mentioned give the best engine numbers, but both a great engine builders, and you can be sure of their product.

mine has 27000 miles and had 2 rebuilds !

either you buy a car with a rebuild and warranty (make sure you can carry it over as a new owner) or
have some spare cash to have it rebuilt or get another engine like this here:
