Hi

New to sp6 ownership and know my AJP8 sounds like a bag of spanners when cold and after doing over 10k in it know its sounds and how it should be.

I am a little paranoid about my new tuscan as when driving around town at 30mph in 4th gear off throttle at around 1400rpm it sounds as if the car is knocking ???? i know it is a bit agricultural like the ajp but i dont know what normal sounds like.

The car makes no noise under hard load and pulls well with good readings on the gauges please tell me i am looking it to things to closely. ( I have only covered 1000 miles in a week and a bit so still getting a feel for it smile.

Cheers Scotty

This was from red hot just been a wee 50 mile hoon tonight and returning back through town i could hear it Doing all the warming up ect like i do with the Cerb

The car has been de-cated but it sounds very ticky to me. It has just had its 12k service weeks ago but i just like to be sure it's not abnormal.

I pulled over to listen to it at tick over and it sounds fine it's just that rev range.

Mine was rebuilt by power in mid 2011 and IMO it does sound a bit rough under anything but full load, louder when oil is cold and then calms down but I don't think it's a quiet engine, not like a BMW straight 6 anyway.

But you say knocking? It probably is nothing if all else appears in good order but worth getting a proper opinion I think.

Maybe knocking is the wrong word loud tapping like very loud tappets but its fine under hard load and at tick over just at town speed i seem to be aware of this noise. Think i will get a second opinion to be safe.

For that sort of speed I'd try 3rd gear and 40+ 4th.

They do sound like a bag of spanners when cold and are have been described like an old sewing machine.

wouldn't like 4th gear at 30mph in mine, to lumpy, think you are in too high a gear, the speed 6 is much revvier than the ajp8 where you have bucket loads of low down torque, so drop it down a cog.

The loud ticking is the injectors firing.

Had my Tuscan II speed six set up by a specialist in "6 and 8 cylinder cars" ;-)

Have to say car/engine sounds completely different, more relaxed... Less mechanical noise and less vibration.

Also had major service, new clutch, new alternator, new bushes, wheel alignment, new rubbers, wiring, new fuel lines, ... done. Car like new now but empty wallet...hehe

I was the same, ajp to speed 6, you have to use the gears more.

I thought the spd6 had more low down torque than an ajp8?

I don't think so my more or less standard ajp seems to be more torquey down low than my red rose sp6. Hence it can drive at 30mph in 4th with ease.

Is it engine or the transmission ??? I had a lot of "shunt" from the diff at low speeds in high gears.

I think a speed six likes to rev higher than a V8 (certainly compared to my RV8).

yes Mine is even more prevalent due tot he larger injectors used in the 4.3

TBH when I first got my T350 5 years ago I was paranoid about each and every noise coming from the engine - like with your old Cerb you'll soon get used to whats normal smile
