Have just bought myself an 03 tamora been a while since I've had a speed six.....it is tappetty on overrun or under no load. Disappears with the slightest throttle. It's due for a 12k service - is it wise to get clearances checked and then the service. Engine is strong and seems fine otherwise?

Hi, welcome back.

Yes clearances are checked on a 12k service.

Yep!
Funds aside if a rebuild is ever needed....but no oil use, and to be honest less noisy than my old Tuscan ( which was still going strong many many miles after I'd sold it) - just the overrun tappetty that I can't quite decide is normal or service needed or.....something else. Last serviced only a couple of thousand ago but over 12 months time wise. Otherwise it's in amazing condition.
Just wondering if a rebuild is imminent should I really pay out for a 12k service or just get the clearances checked first. Need to listen to a few speed sixes again!
Will be booking in for service/second opinion regardless.

Looking at the difference in the spec sheet for a TVR factory schedul 6k and 12k, the services are almost identical except for the fact ALL fluids are changed at 12k whereas just oil is changed at 6k. Some dealers include tappet check at 12k, some it's a few hours labour etc.

When I got my Sag, first service was 12k + tappets, regardless of it's fully documented history - peace of mind for a few extra quid.

The tappets are not really affected by the engine being on or off load . It is possibly something simpler like timing chains requiring adjustment.
