How often i.e time or mileage do the tappets need checking and adjusting?

The engine was rebuilt 9000 miles ago with the post rebuild service done 8000 miles ago. The car has since had a 6k and then a low mileage 12k service 2500 miles ago but no tappets check.

Do I get one done soonish or wait until the next 6k service?

who did the rebuild and the servicing, surely best to ask the engine builder, normally shims are checked on a 12k service, I check mine every winter as part of its service and I only do 5k a year, but I`m an obsessive tinkererhehe

if you are paying to have it done then I`d go with the 12k service interval or possibly every 2 years.

12k. A low mileage 12k service that doesn't do it doesn't really sound like a 12k service. It should just be called a 'low mileage service'.

Hi mate,

Dom did the rebuild. Dave Batty did the last 12k service and Andy at APM the 6k. Andy is the most handy for me so was thinking of getting him to check them at the next 6k service or even sooner if needed.

I know what you mean but a 12k service includes a lot more than the 6k i.e diff and brake fliud change etc.

Just a thought but a more prudent question might be how often do I need to have them checked (or service the engine) to maintain any warranty that came with the rebuild.

The engine is now out of warranty, it came with 2 years.
