Auxiliary shaft oil seal
Discussion
Does anyone have any experience of changing the oil seal on the auxiliary shaft (front end - i.e. aircon pulley end)? Just trying to guage whether this is a straightforward job or whether best left to experts.
Main question is whether the oil seal can be inserted with the timing chain cover still on the engine, or whether it needs to be inserted from the inside with the timing cover off.
Any other comments or tips appreciated!

To replace the oil seal is a very easy job if all goes well. Take off the Alternator, and dis assemble shaft, remembering where all the spacers etc are, until you come to the shaft bearing houselng. This is bolted to the engine block with two hex bolts, if all goes well they should come out ok. The only problem you could have, as i found out, is the steel bolts have oxidised in the alloy of the shaft bearing housing, if that has happened, you will do one of two things, break the hex socket, or the hex bolt in the block. I found the only safe way to free the bolts, was to use a very sharp wood chisel, and chop away the alloy around the head of the steel bolts, when i did this the bolts came out easily. It sounds a bit drastic, but a lot better than rounding of the hex head or even worse breaking the stud. You would then need a bearing and houseing. When you get to the seal, just dig the old one out and press home the new one. A very simple job if all goes ok, you can get all the bits you need from TVR power. Good luck, H. by the way the oil seal goes along the shaft.
