As above I would like to understand why the Tuscans have so many engine replacements as am just buying a Tuscan 2 S. I understand about the finger followers, but surely they have all been sorted by now, I also know about the warming up process. Have you blow an engine if so what happened how did it happen, what happens does it wreck the block, can it be repaired educate me please.

Search the s6 forum...
The key is to check the provenance of the car/engine you are buying.

The Tuscan and the Cerb S6 had early engines - faulty parts from an external (highly regarded) manufacturer are normally listed for blame.

The later cars had this problem rectified, and it's rare for an engine to go pop. You should be fine, if the car has been looked after.

But have a read through the S6 forum, and also the T350 Tamora Sagaris forum as well as the Tuscan forum - S6 cars all.

New to the forum having bought a 2006 Tuscan 2 S and posting this on the general forum I was directed here. I hear of the blown engines all the time, can you guys give me more information, how does the engine go .....not bang please, what are the symptoms that it is on the way out, when it goes what happens, do the rods come out of the block?, If the engine blows is it recoverable at a price? What should you be aware of?

Speed Six engine used to have a reputation of "going" at the finger followers. A pretty harsh ticking sound might be a good clue about them going...

Personally, I had mine go at the bottom end of the rod... Indication: none... It just went fubared pretty quick while cruising at motorway speeds...

Edited to say: 2006 should be pretty much "ironed out"... Block has new oil channels, some major improvements in other departments too. So I think you're fine for a few good miles smile

Speed 6 engine problems is overblown. 2 main issues, top end can be (depending on parts used and who built it) weak. No real obvious symptoms until the problem occurs then TAP TAP TAP. Valve guides also wear, obvious this one, nice blue cloud of smoke out the exhaust on startup. Both will require a top end rebuild though if the second issue is not addressed before it gets out of control a fully rebuild.

Don't panic yourself with every little noise, especially when cold. With a 2006 car I'd just get on and enjoy it. They were pretty sorted by then, and new engines are available from a number of places. I think TVR Power has fixed prices on their website.

Just use your common sense, watch the guages, listen for the fans coming on and off, and check the oil frequently until you get a feel for whether she drinks it or not (my '05 T350 barely ever needed topping up between services).

As all the others have said, stop worrying and enjoy it. When I first got mine I panicked at every little noise, 3 years and 18k (26k total) later my engine is still strong as an Ox!
I note you're in Bedford, I'm St Neots based so will keep an eye open for you....

Pinking, or pre detonation caused my head gasket to go. Being a bit of an ignoramus I did not realise what the crackling noise was that was often heard under hard acceleration.

I am not sure if this is/was a common problem with pre 04 4.0 engines. Others on here will know a lot more than me.

I can share my experience if it helps, although it's something that I'm sure could happen to any engine so it's not an S6 trait.
22000 miles recently serviced. Car running very well, I'd used it for a 1/4 mile day, then a trackday, plus lots of long country drives in between, trip to chatsworth etc.
Took car to Vmax at bruntingthorpe, running fine on way up there, and first run of the day, head gasket blew in between cyl5 and 6. No warning signs or noise etc beforehand.

Pulling it apart it seems it's been running lean at full throttle, and detonating a bit. Most pistons showing some pitting marks, and pistons 5 and 6 have been eaten into more in a few places around the edge. Probably made worse as the HG blew and the gasses whizzing between cylinders.

Top end in good condition though!

Min needed was 2 pistons, reface the block and head, and put back together. However to be safe, it was worth changing all 6 pistons, and getting a later block with the additional cooling and oil galleries.
Once the old block was apart, it's clear that I had the earlier indian conrods (Dec 04 mk2 build so should have had the Linton rods, Grrr!)

So... I only felt safe having new rods and pistons, so ended up talking myself into getting the 4.3 kit!
Benefits for me are knowing the components are better, and cooling is improved, and the 5yr warranty helps!

So I could have gone for a cheaper option and been quite happy... But I chose to go for the full works, even though it was not exactly necessary.
