An Explanation Please

I've got a sp6 Cerb in need of an engine rebuild as its burning a LOT of oil. It's decatted with a big bore sports exhaust. Now it pops a bangs a like no ones business.I always put it down to the decats & exhaust, but today got told it pops bangs as much as it does coz of the state of the engine & it won't be like that after the rebuild.Bummer.I love the noise it makes & its always commented on.
Just an explanation as to why it pops & bangs soooo much pls.
Cheers.

I too have the S6 and I'm hoping the answer is that the fuel mix is rich and that the exhaust spits unburnt fumes out, I'm guessing it pops when decelerating and with high revs? I'm no mechanic but that's what I was lead to believe.
Otherwise I've paid a fortune for a knackered angine....

I have an SP6 with an Austec engine rebuild about 6000 miles ago. It pops and bangs like nobodies business. I'm led to believe this is because of the batch injection method as determined by the original ECU. If you have a different ECU fitted with sequential injection (like Syvecs for example)it may bang less according to how its mapped. Somebody who understands this better will be along presently no doubt to explain better but thats how I understand it. Just an explanation as to why it pops & bangs soooo much pls.

That's pretty much bang on. The batch injection divides the 6 cylinders up into two sets of 3. These three inject at the same time even if one of those cylinders happens to be on a non firing stroke. Fuel then burns in the hot exhaust as soon as it finds some oxygen. There is the pop. Only way it will stop is if you go sequential. This divides the cylinders into 6 seperate injections and only injects fuel when required. Saves fuel but kills pops. That's how I understand it anyway. Cool.Got that, but the way I interpreted the comments was that mine is popping so violently due to state of the engine, combined with the usual unburned fuel.As if it were a case of,excuse my lack of knowledge,"because your valve guides are worn,AB&C is happening inside your engine" or "as your seals have gone,XY&Z is happening"
I so love the anti soundtrack ,I'm worried if its not the same after the rebuild it'll feel like a very expensive anti climax.

Going in the evidence presented, I would say don't worry. You will still pop. Who told you that it was anything to do with valve guides? Just out of interest. I so love the anti soundtrack ,I'm worried if its not the same after the rebuild it'll feel like a very expensive anti climax.

Think I'll put this one to bed then & go find something else to worry about.lol
I didn't get above 25mph and 2,500 revs in this video, so yes try and stop worrying about the Speed 6 engine it does pop as just as much as the AJP, sounds a bit different, but just as enjoyable. Apologies if i've posted this before, i guess 3 months off the road does this to a grown man!!!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN7wyp16EJ8&con...
Just had a re-map at TVR Power, been told my engine is the dogs wotsits for power and condition and it pops and bangs like crazy :big-chuffing-smile:
If it's reslly burning lots of oil, do you see puffs of blue smoke when you pull away from being stationary ?? And are you having to put in a litre of oil every 500 miles ?? Or was whoever you were talking too in the business of engine building ??

Burning lots of oil is prob an understatement Red! Clouds of smoke billow across the quenns highway when I pull away,on hard acceleration & in start up if she's warm. It's embarrassing when stuck in traffic, but you don't get many tailgaters lol.If it's reslly burning lots of oil, do you see puffs of blue smoke when you pull away from being stationary ?? The quotes were: "my god,if that's the sound of a shd engine then don't get it rebuilt-thats the way forward that is!"
Person A: "it really does pop & bang doesn't it"
Person B:" that's coz the way the engie is"
Me:" so it won't sound like that after the rebuild then"
Person B:" Nah,not like that"
Me:"bx"
It's gotta have a rebuild so I may just have to try & take some video footage to compare afterwards.
Popping and banging will be just the same. My Speed 6 was burning a litre of oil every 200 miles (knackered valve guides) by the time I had it fully rebuilt, and it popped and banged just the same post rebuild. In fact it pops and bangs better now, like full throttle upshifts will let off a big double barrel shotgun blast with balls of flame firing out, and on the overrun it makes plenty of noise too.
