I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to engines but Im trying to learn, The alloy tank at the bottom left of the picture just inside the chassi rail, well I have a slight leak coming from the right hand side hose (whare it crosses over the top of the left hand one , it must have been rubbing). The hose goes from the alloy tank to the side of the engine under the airbox and as it seems to be leeking a small amount of oil Im guessing it is taking oil too or from the engine

1st question what is the purpose of the alloy tank the hoses are connected to

2nd question what are the two hoses (marked in the red boxes) and is it ok to remove and replace the leaking one by someone with limited engine skills!! ie ME.

I know the radiator feeds into the alloy tank so Im guessing it is some sort of cooler, does it cool the oil down on the way to and from the engine??

Over to you guys!!

I could be wrong, but I think its the oil cooler. The pipes will take the oil to and from the cooler. You can replace the pipes, you will need suitable pipes for oil and can have them made up.

^^^That is exactly what they are.

Large bore pipe is water through the cooler (shell and tube type) and the smaller bore pipes with the unions are the oil in and out. My unions tend to weep....but it's more of a mist than anything worse.

I replaced all of my oil pipes for goodridge braided hoses with blue anodised aluminium fittings, available from merlin motorsport, just send them your existing pipes and they make new ones to suit, cost around £300, and looks much smarter when finished.

I thought i recognised that engine bay. Yes george, it is an oil cooler and the pipe's that you are asking about are a short pipe from the oil pump to the cooler and a long one from the cooler to the engine and goes to just above the oil filter under the airbox.
