Hi,
So, my S6 uses about 1L of oil about every 1000mls which I am told is pretty normal. I was at a track day on Monday driving it very hard all day (with a breaks to cool down) but it seems to have used 2L of oil in that 1 day.
Do people consider that normal or alarming?
Thanks,
J.
Alarming for two reasons, one that it used that much, the other that you didn't check it between sessions. So, my S6 uses about 1L of oil about every 1000mls which I am told is pretty normal. High use at track days can be influenced by the oil being used. If it's a 0-40 I'm not suprised it's used quite a bit, if its a semi synth, again not too surpised, but 2 litres? are you 100% sure.
Can you say for certain that the level was at full or slightly over before your first session on track. Don't say you didn't check it, that's the wrong answer for a caring S6 owner

I did check it several times during the event hence why I know it used 2L (well, maybe 1,5L depending on reading), but I only took a 1L bottle. After I nipped to Halfords at the end of the day for more, it took another 1L to get it back to where it started the day at (1/2 way between the dots)High use at track days can be influenced by the oil being used. It's 10-40 semi-synth
I'm as sure as any T350 owner can be, getting a accurate, regular measurement reaching under the bonnet is a hot testing task for anyone...
Thx, J.

It is difficult to get consistant readings on any of the S6 cars, but if your being branded at the same time it doesn't help. Track use is always heavier, the engine works hard and there are 6 or 7 cooling cycles involved. It's 10-40 semi-synth

I would be tempted to consider a 50 or 60 grade full synthetic for track use. I have with all my S6 cars and see 0.5 to 0.75 use in an 8 hour track day. Useage will reduce with a change in oil.
The better news is that consumption should revert to normal when useage returns to normal.

My Sagaris hasn't used any oil in the 4 years of ownership I've had it, I check it every week (along with my list of other checks) and it never moves (i.e. no oil use in about 4k miles per year)
My T350 is the same, albeit over 6-7k a year. Never had to put a drop in it, whilst I don't do track work it does get used hard on the road. Those whose cars don't use oil - how often do you get past 6,000rpm? Mine doesn't use any in 'normal' driving - I can drive across Europe and zoom around The Alps and it will not need topping up. However, stretch the engine towards the redline on a track and it will start to suck a little oil. Probably not as much as the OP, but oil consumption will go up once you're driving close to the limiter on these engines (not sure about special rebuilds).
I doubt there are many cars that don't use a bit of oil on a track day.

Honestly - a fair bit! I don't redline it but do run to just below 7k fairly often. I've done driving tours (Petrolhead Nirvana) that are hardly taking it easy, PH hoons along with sporting bears dream rides all of which I push the car to what it was designed for. I obviously can't comment re/ track work but for fast road I don't use a drop. I doubt there are many cars that don't use a bit of oil on a track day.

DONT USE SYNTHETIC OIL IN THESE ENGINES HOW MANY MORE TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT USE 20/50 or 20/60 MILLERS OR ANOTHER BRAND WITH HIGH CONTENT OF ZDDP IN IT.
I don't recall you ever saying?????Helix 10/40 is semi syn BTW! You can also take the caps lock off if you want....

Why specifically in relation to a S6 engine where the camshafts have been run-in (500 Miles+).edited for what clarification

Synthetic oils are to thin also they have a very low content of ZDDP which is an anti scuffing agent that helps protect the camshafts and followers also semi synthetics 20/50 20/60 are thicker which helps oil consumption Millers CSS 20/60 semi synthetic is my choice and it works well with a high content of ZDDP.
I've seen a lot of posts about oil with people regularly using 0-40, 5-40, 10-40 etc. What is the difference between a 0-40 or a 5-40 and a 20-60 even if I was using exactly the same brand eg Millers, the same type eg CSS with the same ZDDP content but just 20-60 compared with 0-40 ??
I suppose I'm asking what do the 0-40 and 20-60 actually mean to a layman??

Many thanks. As I undertsand, most S6 bulders recommend 0/something oil to get quick lubrictaion when cold.
Why would you want it thicker as thicker oil takes longer to circulate, and causes damage to the parts that see oil last (camshaft)??
Without wanting to sound condesending, because I don't know 100%. Can you tell me, does a 20/50 semi synthetic oil have the same viscosity as a 20/50 full synthetic?
I've stuck with full synthetics (after running in) for my road and race car engines for longer than I can remember with no cam wear issues. I've not had to replace any cats either, maybe because I'm not pushing some of the components of ZDDP through them? Interested to resolve.
