Not that my MK1 2003 4.0l Tuscan needs one at the moment (touch wood), but while theoretically comprising a wish list of mods, i have read all the threads regarding the merits, costs, and expectations from STR8six, power, racing green rebuilds etc , but would like to throw this question out there...

A fully rebuilt/reconditioned speed six with uprated internal components can be had for around £5k ish + vat etc.

Has anyone had an engine rebuild and then instead of increasing capacity gone down the de-catting and re- mapping/chipping route to increase performance and power figures ?

My thinking is that with 4.3s/4.5s and FFF's coming out at 10K plus , can a simple rebuild and decat with remap offer anywhere near the same reliability and performance, for a fraction of the price ?

After all we are told that the airbox (induction) and Manifold (exhaust) design is as good as it gets on the speed six, so can it take more fuel/air after a rebuild with great effect ?

cheers

I don't think the airbox design is optimal as I got a noticeable increase in torque after fitting the ACT carbon airbox. Can't comment on the manifold design but again on my T350 I noticed modest torque and power gains by de-catting and then having a big bore straight through exhaust system made up (sounds much better too).

Reliability yes, power/torque no.

I am considering putting an AJP into the sagaris targa I am building for myself right now . The dilemma is I have a Red rose ,steel crank ,straight six engine with 1500 miles since a factory rebuild in 2004 and a very late AJP with 6000 miles on it . I have not seen any speed six engines independantly tested giving over 400 hp but plenty of AJPs are with more torque aswell . The AJP wil not bolt staight in and will probably have to be dry sumped (more power still ?)

Hi David, I seem to remember that you dropped an AJP V8 into a T350 chassis about 4 years ago. What haapened to that? J

That was more like 6 years ago . My wife and the fact that the original speed six engine`s longevity meant that it is still in the car.
