Got the rocker off.. want to satisfy my curiosity and check chain tension and clearances.

Is it OK to turn the engine over using a large spanner on the hex nut on the cam.. or use the flywheel..

Also, what's the best way to determine if the timing chain needs adjusting..I have abt 10mm up and down movement?

NO DO NOT use a large spanner on the hex nut on the cam, even if you have removed the spark plugs.
22mm spanner on the bolt that hold the damper to the front of the crankshaft.
It's just behind the bottom of the oil tank.
