Thanks to Dom for the idea but after a couple of trips with wild temperature fluctuations and hit and miss fan operation I've bled the cooling system again with the front end raised and a 2 litre container screwed into the swirl pot. Now all is well again. I can sleep again!

Can I ask what problems you were having, and how exactly you ended up bleeding the cooling system?

Had the system pressure tested and it failed due to weeping in the radiator core. I bought a new ally rad and fitted it then bled the system as photo above. As said before temp problems weren't due to air locks or leaks but was corroded connections from temp sensor to ecu.

Dont know anything about S6 engine, but my LS Tuscan runs a small steam pipe from the highest point on the cylinder heads and also the top of the radiator, back to the top of the header tank

Lucky you, we don't have that pleasure! To be fair when bleeding the S6 in the future I'll find it relatively easy having done all the groundwork once. I suspect I've put the 'Chimney'away for some time. thumbup
