Hi guys,
heading abroad for 8 months next march as a work placement, wherever I go I will be working, living and carrying out usual activities in this country (new mobile, bank a/c, etc.) Is it possible to return to Ireland with a vehicle from that country and register it without vrt costs??
Thanks

Possibly, but it's worth inquiring more into. Students for example who go to college in the UK for a year or couple of years are exempt from availing of the loophole!

Yes, provided you can prove you were resident(paying taxes, rent, bills, contract of employment from company in said country) and in possession/ownership of the car for a minimum of 6 months while you resided there.

Hi Kon,
You'll need to have the car at least six months, and proof that you were working there for a year.

Will I have to pay anything when I come back for the summer?
This is the situation: I'm in Wales at the moment, have just got a car, have to go on placement in the North and then after my time at home in the South East during July/August go back to Wales, so would I be exempt seeing as I will be bringing the car back to Wales again.. but I will be around for more than the six weeks grace period for using a foreign reg car and not registering it in Ireland..

Do you have an English license, you are better off with one, as you have more ground to stand on when proving to customs/gaurds that you are not based in the Republic anymore! As for the "grace period" a day trip up North will technicaly mean you were back in UK.

Similar question -

We will soon be opening an office in NI. If I buy a car & register/insure it to that address can I then put it on Irish plates VRT free after six months?
If so would I have to register it to the company address down here or could I put it to my home address?

The question is where are you resident for that period? If living in the North, you are all set.

Just did a VRT calculation on their website for the car I want to buy in UK.

Car is an Audi A8 4.2 TDi Quattro Sport, 3 years old.

Cost of the car in the UK from a MAIN DEALER is £20K ish or thereabouts.

The VRT quote for the same car -

€25,353yikesyikes

I do belive that the people responsible for the above quote may well be related to Bugsy Malone!

This is also an "ESTIMATE"
If you get any extras (eg. bigger wheels, sports pack, whatever) on that car
You will get a higher VRT bill because the car is worth more!!
Total Robery,
Try a quote on a 997 GT3 or something.
