PHers, we do quite a bit of business in Ireland, (empty bottles so nothing too interesting), and we are going to import some 40'containers from Egypt to hold in storage in County Monaghan and Clare.

Customs are kicking up a fuss, as they want the VAT paid, but we can't as we would never get it back.

We are storing it at a customer's premises, who will despatch on our behalf.

My thinking is that the only way round it is for the customer to pay for the VAT on their deferment account and then claim it back, and we pay them a small service charge.

The goods are 'invoiced' to the customer, although we retain the title until they are sold.

Is there something I am missing?

They are right.

That's probably not going to be answered here.

Try Pie and Piston on here or www.boards.ie

Boards will no doubt be full of bullst but you may actually get your answer there.

And there I was wondering what nice car was about to be imported into Ireland.

biggrin

If you're importing into ireland, the same rules apply as in any other country in the EC. VAT is payable at point of entry, simple as that.
If you're exporting from egypt to anywhere in the EC you should know that, and if you dont know that, get out of the business you're in,

Yeah well, we only export to 43 countries, import from 25, and only been doing it for 130+ years, so we 'really' don't know what we are doing.

It was a specific question as we weren't getting anywhere with usual channels. We have a UK deferment account but not for Ireland.

Strange that you drag it up after all this time, for just your second post ... Hhmm ...

The client paid in the end but not ideal. Now we just ship millions of the things from the UK ...
