The above are all brokers, but will give you an idea what you'll be paying. There are others but these are the biggest.

Direct quotes from insurance companies, lots of people seem to find Quinn to be cheapest however it seems questions remain over the quality of their service. I'm with AXA who won't quote online but were by far the best quote I got at my last renewal, they seem to be trying to drum up alot of new business at the moment so are very competitive. There are of course others but these'll give you an idea. I'd expect you to be paying alot more in Ireland than you are in GB so be prepared for a bit of a shock!
Also depending how long you'll be staying here you may be required to register the car here. We have a lovely tax here called VRT (vehicle registration tax) you probably won't be eligible to pay it but I'd recommend that you do some research into it before you decide to bring the car over, just to be sure (to be sure). If you do have to pay it it'll be 36% of whatever the govt decide your Golf is worth! I'd recommend posting any further questions you have about Ireland on octane.ie, it's like a parochial PH, the Ireland section on PH can be pretty quiet so you'll get a faster response on octane.

Whilst Quinn were very competitive insuring my car in Northern Ireland, they were very unhelpful and threw up many obstacles when I was transferring my insurance to the south. My advice is to read between the lines and thread very carefully with these guys. They wanted me to cancel my policy and start a new one(losing a whole year of a no-claims bonus???). AXA were very reasonable which was refreshing.
Do you need to insure over here?
I don't exactly want to broadcast what I and other Brits are doing in Cork at present, but ...... !!
Are you keeping permanent address in UK?
Can you get unlimited "Green Card" cover on your current UK policy?
If you want to mail me I will let you know what we are doing with our two cars. (But my everyday drive is an Irish registered etc car.)

Thanks for the responses everyone - time for some serious phoning and emailing around.
Breire - luckily I looked into the VRT situation soon after our decision to move, I've had the Golf 18 months so decided to keep it for the time being. It's also under the 2 litre barrier for the stupidly expensive road tax. I had a Cerbera a couple of years ago so that would have well and truly stung me.
BobCuth - I will drop you an email if you don't mind. I don't plan on keeping a UK address, but would be grateful of some of your thoughts.
Cheers
