There's a good supplement in todays Independent on what the new costs are going to be.It makes harrowing reading , but it also throws up any number of anomalies;

Take for example the Volvo XC90 D5 ..
After July , anyone registering one of these suckers had better be sure to buy a manual rather than a geartronic one . The manual fives off 219gms of CO2 per Km , the G/Tron is more like 239. So this means the difference between E1000 in road tax in one and E2000 for the other .
And to further brighten your day , this tax not only applies to new cars , but any cars registered after July 1st.

HOLY SHIT BALLS.

If you are going to import a big-engined car - now is the time to do it (as long as it is not a Diesel BMW).

Interesting thread started by sjbrophy over on Octane during the past week on this subject.

http://www.octane.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=14469

It's worth having a look at it as it proves that the notion that the new rates are to help with keeping our environment green is a load of bks.

It's purely for cash.

Can't confirm that yet Ballcock. The original legislation called for all cars be they new or second hand imports (and therefore new to Ireland) registered after July 1st to be on the new system.

There was a proposed ammendment to the legislation that called for all cars on 08 plates (either new or second hand imports) be put on the new system after July and that all cars on 07 plates and older remain on the cc based taxation system. I don't think it has been approved yet butthe likelihood is that it will be.

The Sunday Business Post Motoring Supplement from two Sundays ago stated that the new rules would apply to all cars registered in the State after July, regardless of what the number plate says.

And as we all know, if it's in a newspaper, it must be true! wink

That'd be great news , I'm trying to import an '06 XC90 but I've been draggin my heals / can't find the right car / can't sell the wifes '04 one!

Let us know if you hear the outcome , or could you tell me where you might find this info?

VRT will be calculated on the CO2 rating, so without even checking I would assume 36% of the OMSP.

Road tax will be calculated on the CC system.
