hi - i am importing my tvr chimaera 400 at the end of the month - 2 things:

anyone got any tips on the best place to go for insurance? the best deal i can find so far is FirstIreland at euro822 (with a 4K excess!), or Britton at 1250 (with a 300 excess). i am 37 with 4 years NCB.

also, any servicing suggestions - the only one i have seen reference to so far is Torque Flight in Ballygowan

all suggestions welcome!!!

I have a Cerbera over here for nearly a year now.

Mine was on UK plates 'til the start of '07 and strangely enough the VRT dropped a bit in January as the car was classed as a year older, but obviously I'd not suggest anyone did something like that to avoid paying some of the VRT on it.

I have a part-time motor trader insurance policy so it's not as much of an issue for me, but I'm only paying that kind of money for it.

I have the "sports and high performance" add-on and a smaller excess than that plus I can sit into anything (with the owners permission) and drive it fully covered.

As for service, I've been able to do everything so far myself.

Torqueflyte are well respected but, only last week, I heard they are, allegedly, very slow.

Are you a member of the TVR Club?

If not, I can send you the details of the RoI Regional Organiser, and as he's a Chimera owner himself he'll probably be able to help you with specific info regarding service, etc on it.

I go thru Gallagher's insurance brokers , they seem to have a handle on the companies who insure high performance cars .. May be worth giving them a ring on 01 2802785.
I've no axe to grind or any connection with them except for the wads of insurance cash they extract from me ...

Thanks! As I am transferring residence, am hoping the VRT won't be an issue ... I've been using the car in the UK for the past year and ordinarily resident there since 2004/5

I got a quote today from AXA (via insure.ie) for 800 with a 200 excess. Will call Gallaghers now and let you know how I get on - thanks for the tip.

Please do forward on details of the RoI TVR club and I'll make contact.

Thanks again!

Funny you should say that - have you seen this one?

http://jjreillycars.webzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?...

They are saying Eur5K VRT on a Eur15K OMSP.

I'm not sure how realistic any OMSP is on a TVR - there wouldn't exactly be a lot of market data to go on!

I was contemplating tvr ownership at the start of the year (griff) change of job put an end to it, but at pricing stage i was ringing and e-mailing the vrt offices and getting no where. When ringing them i was told to e-mail full details of specific car, i siad i had but not getting an answer, then told they would have to see the car, i siad i need an estimate, they told me they can't without seeing it...you get the jist.. most unhelpfull shower of $%^&£ i have ever come accross considering they were taking my money. what does customer service matter they are getting my money ethier way..never did get a price from them..

sorry for the rant.. vrt strikes a nerve with me..

I found brittons the most compeditive for me 29 full ncb , just over 1k iirc

BTW if you say your waiting on the log book from the dealer you can get a stamped form from the vrt office stating your "intention to pay" this will stop them taking the car off you, buys you 6 weeks iirc... nothing to stop you, em "doctoring the date" not that i would recommend this to anyone

I hear what you're saying. I imported a VW Golf in 2001 but I was transferring residence so managed to get through without paying. However, even then i struggled to get a value out of them before i bought it over (was asking just in case!). And that was a run of the mill Golf! I'm surprised there hasn't been more fuss made about VRT as it's against EU laws concerning free movement of goods, but there you go.

As it happens, I am transferring residence again this time ... I fulfill all the criteria (in theory) but will let you know how i get on !

if bringing one back, be prepared for the vicious onramp and even more vicious offramp getting on/off the ferry. pay no attention to the impatient numpty operators who will be ignorantly waving you forward, take your time taking those ramps, and take them at the sharpest angle you can, not head-on, otherwise you're going to have at least a scrape at worst a damaged bumper.

This is great advice! It's true the operators are always waving you forward and then 2 seconds after you hear the dreaded scrape they pound on the bonnet of the car. Jeeee thanks wink Other then that best of luck, it will be great having another tvr owner on the emerald isle biggrin

I've just had mine serviced and had a suspension set-up.

It was done by a company called Munster Motorsport whose boss man is Eoin Corrigan.

He's an F1 mechanic whose also specialised in suspension set-up and he also worked on the JCB Dieselmax landspeed record project as a component fabricator.

I was well-impressed with the improvement in the car and they certainly didn't fleece me for the work.

In fact I've actually paid more to have a van serviced in the past.

They really seem to know their stuff and only work on unusual and high-end cars.

Check them out here
