greetings all
only just found pistonheads in the last few weeks and have recently joined up and started posting on another forum and found the gassing station for ireland tonight. I wish I had been aware of the community of fellow petrolheads online long ago but better late than never.
I'm a bit of a magpie so where most people are content with one or two cars I'm piling them like they are going out of business.
most of them are off the road on SORN with the NI motoring mob but most will go back on the road as they are all still driveable, but need work.
When we first moved here from Australia I had the unfortunate luck to buy a used nissan bluebird from my uncle when I had been driving a 5.9 litre Chrysler in OZ and it took me several years to get back to the point where I could afford a decent car and the insurance to go with it. that first decent car was a 94 BMW 525td in silver with nice nonstandard alloys, however I only had it about 6 months when I drove it through a flood of water and wrecked the engine, the insurance co. wrote it off as a new engine ( or even secondhand ) was more than half the value of the car.
That was my first and last diesel, as I didn't think much of it nor any other diesel I have driven. of course owning a petrol station that and watching everybody run on red diesel and kero and anything in between has set me against diesels even more.
However my love of german cars begain there and with a few audis I have had, so i now have three bmw's and three audi's.
just to list what I have:
1989 BMW Alpina B10 3.5
1989 BMW 735iL
1984 BMW 525E ( this car is my project car and I plan a ground up resto on it soon, including possibly a high output chevy or dodge engine)
1998 Audi A4 1.8T sport
2001 Audi A6 1.8T quattro
and the only car that is actually on the road at the moment
2006 (56 plate) Audi A4 2.0T Sline Quattro Avant special edition (220ps)
and after we sold our house last november I decided that I wanted to go on a rally and have chosen the cannonball in July this year and figured I would get a car for just that purpose, something different, something powerful and something I wouldn't lose to much money on. Last weeked I plunked my deposit on one of the last Vauxhall Monaro VXR's available in the UK at 10000stg off the list price. for 27K it was the most powerful car you could buy brand new. there are lots of other cars (primarily the new audi rs4 and the roush mustang) that I would have loved but I wanted a cash only deal and 27 was past my upper limit but I thought you only live once.
I know a few people around dundalk that have some nice motors as well and possibly knew about this site before I did. R U there Gearoid with your Polo G40?
Anyone else going on the cannonball this year, I know of one other Monaro owner from the HSV and monaro forum that is going. I'm just having trouble convincing someone to pay half and go with me.
anyway I'll stop gassing and go to bed

What is the Furball 5000 and where does it go to and from...??
Have a look here
www.furball5000.co.uk
It's run by a couple of guys off PH (gruffy and slvrcerb).
I went on the "Alpine" one but they also have another "Viking" tour this year.
YOu can tell them I told you about it if you like.

Adrian,
I have a Skyline for sale that'll suit you for the trip.
Plus if you get lost it'll get you there as it went the route last year and knows it's way
thanks for the welcome guys, been spending the last few weeks getting comfortable with the monaro, I've even had the rear end sideways a few times in the wet. but I'm going handy as I'd like to still have the car for the cannonball. Real brute of a car that picks you up by the scruff of the neck and hurls you forward. I've driven an M5 in the past ( current and previous generation) and while they are incredible no doubt they don't seem to have the same sense of overwhelming power, nor do they sound as good. the downside is this car was built down to a price as the interior fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. a new S4 Audi would only cost a couple of grand more ( based on the original 37K price) but the fit and finish of an Audi is miles ahead.
I chose the cannonball over all the others as this year I can afford it and I really just want to see a large number of performance cars being used on the road, and not just on my TV. Next year my funds probably will only stretch to the scumball rally.
