..from the Irish Independent today...
AN Irishman in a 'Cannonball Run' road race across Europe has been caught in Germany
The Porsche-driving speedster was one of nine men fined in Germany after they were caught speeding at up to 270kph, or 170mph.
Although German Autobahn's have no upper speed limit, there are sections where some restrictions apply - as many Irish drivers have found to their cost.
Last night, the German police named the 26-year-old Irishman as 'David J . . . ', but under German law would not give his full family name.
He gave an address in West Sussex and was driving a Porsche 911 GT2 when arrested near Nuremberg and fined €1,500.
The car costs around €170,000 new and is one of the fastest cars on the roads, according to motoring magazines.
"This is not the first time there's been a race like this across Germany," explained Pieter Grimm, the spokesman for the Swabian police.
He said arrests were made in July, too.
The race is believed to have travelled across Italy and Austria before finally coming to a halt in Southern Germany.
Known as a 'Gumball' race or emulating the '80s Burt Reynolds movie, 'Cannonball Run', the road racers were trying to dodge police in high-performance cars.

Hey London, old bestest buddy of mine . Go for the Noble. Only ever seen 1 English reg Noble here, so exclusivity guaranteed. Curiously, only old farts drive 911's and I know of three round here that are at least late 50's!
