I understand that if I am moving back to Ireland, having been living in the UK, it is possible to register my car in Ireland without paying the dreaded VRT.

How does one go about doing this? Is the process simple or complicated? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Be very careful about what car you are bringing. Post July 2008 and low emissions makes a massive difference to annual road tax. Anything older gets hammered especially in 2 litre and above.

Thanks all. Most helpful.

I'm afraid I may still get caught with annual motor tax for an older vehicle. So, to help justify this, how many Chimaeras are in Ireland?

Well you Chimera is what 3.5litre? Anything bigger than 3l is €1800 per year.

Thanks. The TVR is a 4L so will be subject to the to tax band.

It's a pure rip off here. One fella in our MG-Rover group is paying 1000 euro a year on his Rover 75. In the north we only pay £145 a year on tax.

Howdy
You need to prove that you lived in the UK for the past 6 months
Need to bring your bank statements and utility bill with you to the VRT / tax office.

As the lads state be very aware of when the car was manufactured. Not date of first registration but actual build date

Before 2008 tax is on engine size
Jan to June 2008 its the based on emissions but it will be the lesser of emissions versus engine size

July 2008 onwards its done on emissions.
I brought in a 110 Defender when I moved back to Ireland and gone stung on the emissions
