Holiday In Southern Ireland
Discussion
Hello,
I am looking on coming over to Ireland via Rosslaire Ferry routes sometime between September and November with my other half. We will be hoteling and travelling by car. Moving round hotels is the plan, kind of a road trip.
Could people suggest some places to visit and some good roads, if there are any specific attractions if you know of good hotels then that info would be useful too.
When is the weather best in this period and are there any busy dates I should defiantly avoid.
Thanks.
Rick

forecast for sept is good , think Nov. is too late in year . bad weather most likely!
you should try the infamous ring of Kerry for scenery / roads and also Bantry and Glengariff in West Cork( they are in the general same area) - anywhere along the south and west coast will be fab.
I am originally from Dublin but now living in Cork , while there is nothing wrong with Dublin and the east coast if you want to experience the real Ireland you must go to Cork/ Kerry or anywhere along West Coast whether it be Galway or up to Donegal.
Beware of toll roads in Waterford , cork , galway , limerick ,louth and Dublin . Though cars only pay less than 2 euro !

Stay west
From rosslare drive down to Cork through Youghal and then from Cork Head for Kinsale, Glandore, Baltimore, Schull, Bantry, Glengarriff - over the Healy Pass- down to Kemare the either out around the ring of Kerry - sneem, caherdaniel and Waterville are nice but loads of Americans in coaches- , or over molls gap and down into Killarney then out the south side of the dingle peninsula to Dingle town, round Slea head and then over the Conor pass to the north side and back to Tralee via the maharees, and breathe... If you do all that in roughly that order you'll see some amazing views and drive on some great roads.
Hotels depends on budget - lots of nice boutiques type places or grand old hotels or just very good high quality b&bs.
Stand outs are Sneem Falls, near Kenmare, Waterville hotel, lake hotel or aghadoe heights hotel Killarney, Benners Hotel, Dingle, harbour House, Fahamore, the Maharees.
Re driving distances - assume at least twice as long for the same distance over here and generally if there's a coast road take it and get lost. You'll always find a good bar or beach or restaurant or perhaps all 3 that way.
Enjoy

If you are coming from Rosslare and plan on heading towards Cork there are some nice places to visit in between. From the port, you can drive to Hook Head lighthouse and check that out. I think it's the oldest operational lighthouse. From there you could go to Duncannon where you can (legally) drive on the beach which can be fun
Then get the small car ferry to Passage East. You're now in County Waterford. Dunmore East is a short spin and a beautiful seaside town, well worth a visit. You can then make your way to Tramore and drive the coast road to Dungarvan. There are some great roads and scenery along the Copper Coast.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies guys, really helpful, unfortunately the last month has been awkward to say the least, lost job and had lease ended on house! We have a new house to go to but holiday money has gone on moving house!
I will keep this thread bookmarked and hopefully we will get to come over in the Spring.
Thanks.
