Hi all,

I'm importing a car I bought on Ebay in a few days.

The car has been declared SORN as it's not in use and therefore it doesn't have a valid tax disc.

As I have an approximate two hour drive from pick-up to Holyhead, I'm conscious of the fact that I should have valid tax when driving in the Uk in case I get pulled over etc.

Is it possible for me to arrange some kind of temporary cover or is it worth running the risk of driving without tax and getting pulled over etc?

Also as regards documentation I understand the owner has to present me with the full V5 document.
Then upon return I have to contact the NCT crowd to arrange a vrt inspection and once I have paid the vrt due the car can be registered and I can collect my registration plates.

Is there anything I'm missing or not thinking of?

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

V5, everything but section 11, seller holds onto that and sends to DVLA.. Wrt SORN, insure car and if stopped explain that the car has been bought by yourself and are exporting.

Would anyone know what the VRT situation is with a car that needed work when being imported, ie did not have an MOT and was not road worthy. How wouuld they access it, and would they issue registration papers before or after repairs. NCT is not the same as Registration or is it ?

In the old days it made no difference I'm not sure what the setup is now but they do not recognise a MOT or lack of it so you would have to clear it first and then they would NCT it.

There was a guy at the last Cork cars and coffee who brought in a Delta that was scraped, he has since rebuilt it and did a great job, but they charged him full price for it but he kept appealing it. Every time they knocked a few quid off and he would appeal it again, he did not tell me how many times he appealed it but it took him a long time to get the price that he was happy with.

He might be at the C&C on Sunday if you are around and could give you all the details.

Are you sure that this has not changed, I brought in a car last year and as far as I can remember the seller gave me all of the V5 and when I paid the VRT at the NCT office they took it and I presume they sent back the relavent part to the UK.

Apologies if I have this wrong, a year is a long time. rolleyes

I think he appealed it over and over again and finally got the money back in one go on the last appeal he lodged if I remember the story correctly.

He will be along Sunday anyway and can fill you in.

What car are you bringing in?

It s just a general query, not the money aspect but whether or not a car not destined for the road STRAIGHT away needs this Special NCT.

Rules changed in last few years and the car has to be booked for VRT within 7 days of bringing it into the country and you must complete the registration process within 30 days. You have to prove the date that you brought it in, i.e. ferry ticket. The NCT crowd look for this and about 6 other items. If you are short any of the items they will not VRT it for you.

See here http://www.nct.ie/vrt.html

I was stopped at a check point while still on UK plates and the nice detective mad wanted to see my licence, insurance etc. He was disgusted when I had everything for him so he proceeded to ask me when I was paying the VRT. I gave him the date and he pointed out that it was longer than the time allowed so I pointed out that NCT crowd couldn't see me before that in Cork and that I was going out of my way to get it done sooner in Waterford. Again disgusted, so he had to wave me on.

Not sure what happens with a car that is not destined for the road straight away but technically they could back date the VRT to the date of import and charge you more.

Hope this helps.

Hi Thema, it may have changed but I just brought one in last month and like the past I did the above with no probs. I suppose my ignorance may have been bliss wink.
