Elise s2 rear bonnet will not open

I have a 2001 Elise s2. The bonnet will not open with the key. It allows a quarter turn but there is not much resistance. The battery is flat and I am struggling to get any solution to access the battery/engine.

I note from posts from 2008 that there is a simple way to gain entry without damaging the vents etc. the solution was provided by private message so I am hoping those that know are on here…..
