Just been reading a letter in the latest EVO from someone who's engine let go at 14k miles on a track day.
It appears he downshifted at too high a revs.

The thing that struck me was the mention of these engines having a known weakness in the oil pump.

Is it known and does anyone know anything about it?

Hi,

I too saw this thread and it concerned me sightly as I was going to Spa last Monday. Happy to say my standard exige(apart from a 2bular exhaust) was fine and never missed a beat dispite some high reving. there was some other exiges there and I didn't see any problems with them either.

Hope it helps.

Over to Kyle....

It is a recognised weak spot on the Toyota 2ZZ that the oil pump is susciptble to damage if the maximum rev range is exceeded and if it stops pumping oil, that will clearly lead to serious damage throughout the engine.

The ECU stops you doing exceeding maximum RPM while accelerating, but if you fluff a change from 5th to 4th at 100mph and shove it into second.... I guess you'll be at 12k revs... possibly very briefly!

But as long as you don't do this... the 2ZZ is pretty reliable and even if you did break it (or wear one out, which is possible) its a lot cheaper to replace than anything from Porsche, for example.

As said, if you don't do anything overly daft, the engine should be protected and the risk is low.

Like SPB2008, my standard (apart from 2bular) Exige survived multiple excursions to the top-end during my Nurburgring trip over the weekend just gone, and never skipped a beat. I even fluffed a gearchange once, but all was well.

Can you have the 'working log' (DME - thingy) checked for over-revs on these like you can on Porsche's?

According to EVO the ecu records the data.
For this reason they (Lotus) found out about a split second down shift over-rev and wouldn't pay out on the warranty.

Bummer. But only the same as Porsche... and probably any other manufacturer nowadays. One of the hidden beauties of technology i'm afraid. I wouldn't let it put you off... but i would request a read-out before the exchange of money
