Hi All!

I have an issue with my S2 Exige Club Racer in that my number plate is quite often catching on various bumps and holes in the road. Better that than damaging the carbon fibre front splitter I suppose!

It has got to the point however where I'm getting concerned that because the plate is screwed onto the front splitter that I will eventually hit a bump big enough and too quickly that it will cause some damage.

Anyway, what is the smallest plate that you can legally get away with? Are sticker plates legal? And can anyone recommend any decent number plate producers?

Many thanks in advance!

Cheers

I have a plate stuck to the front of my splitter on the Exige but the bottom edge of the plate is level with the bottom of the splitter, never had any issues of it getting near to hitting anything. I'd have thought if your plate is extending down from the splitter towards the ground then it will be acting as a wind break anyway so you would be better moving it up a bit.

I use double sided velcro to hold my 3/4 plate on. Technically a 3/4 plate is illegal but I've run round with it for 4 years without issue and just went through it's MOT this morning. Still have a full size one in the boot but completely forgot to swap it over for the test.

I've found www.fancyplates.com are pretty good

Have you thought about nylon bolts to restrain the number plate? I have a Lotus Power splitter on my Exige (S1 admittedly) and it's fitted with them so that if it catches something solid it will tear off the splitter without damaging the clam. I haven't yet had cause to test this theory, though it's harmlessly scraped a few times. Better damaging the cheapest item than the most expensive!

Exactly this. The plates originally on the car when I bought it were mounted significantly lower than this edge, and it did catch every so often, so when I bought some GB plates the other week, I mounted it higher by 20mm or so so it's pretty much flush with the bottom edge of the splitter now.

As said over in SELOC, ditch the screws and go for adhesive pads or velcro.

This seems quite a good idea providing that the bolts give way before the clam does. I have just stuck my number on with double sided pads with the bottom of the number plate level with the bottom of the clam, so hopefully it shouldn't get knocked off.

You know Simon with the silver S1 who we met at Donington? He lost his Lotus Power splitter on a ferry apparently and the nylon bolts did their job. Not a theory I'm keen to test, but it is an occupational hazard. I was cursing both splitter and diffuser at Oulton Park on Monday as we were directed over the rally course and I could hear both ends scraping on the tarmac.

That sounds excellent then, I was just dubious as to which would give way first. Great idea, I shall bear these in mind.

You can have the plate cut down to 11mm around the numbers/letters and still be totally legal, you would be surprised the difference this makes.
