Certainly seems like the multi-function relay that controls the fuel pump, ECU signal etc. to me. It had problems starting in the few weeks leading up to yesterday, then as I was driving the rev counter dropped to zero, engine was still running, but throttle did nothing.
Pulled over (luckily I was right next to a big lay-by) and it died as I stopped. Won't start again, turning the key just gets a click from the MFRU.
Putting a live feed to the starter turns it over, but obviously it won't fire as no fuel pump or spark etc.
They have agreed that they will transport it to a local garage of my choice, but if it's just this MFRU thing I should be able to fit a new one myself. Two questions though:

1. Is it just a generic Rover part, or does it need to be done especially by a dealer or something as it's related to the immobiliser?
2. Given the answer to 1 is that it's just a generic part, has anyone got a part number handy, and how much am I likely to pay for one?

By way of thanks, here it is during the "drag of shame"...

Cheers, I bought a brand new proper Rover one (old stock) in the end. Arrived yesterday, will be going into the car tonight provided I get home at a reasonable hour.

It's an upside down bucket type moulding to keep the water out
Let us know if yours was mounted so as to fill up with water instead

I think the problem may be that it wasn't mounted at all. It was hanging by the connectors, having become unclipped.

I guess I should stop taking it off jumps.

Replaced the MFRU, still same issue. Sure the click of a solenoid is coming from the MFRU though...weird.

Ho hum, off to Sportomotive it goes...

That'll teach me to jump in with a mate's similar fault.
The immobiliser goes through there too
Good auto lecyy should be able to sort it

Having googled the arse off it I think it's something to do with the wiring to the immobiliser. It was having intermittent immobiliser issues before, so that's a likely candidate. I've checked all the wiring down there, there is one that appears to be missing its bullet crimped other end.

Still, needs to go to Sportomotive for some new front shocks anyway. I'm sure they'll be able to fix it far more easily than I can. I struggled for an entire weekend before on an immobiliser on a 205 XS and had to give up and bypass it in the end, and that's on a car I know. I don't want to go around ripping bits out of a car I'm still learning about.

Where are these "good auto electricians" I keep hearing about? I've been looking for one for four years or so, ever since my 205 GTI developed an interesting fault with the dash - every sensor appears to read half its assigned value. Been to six different places, not one has been able to sort the issue. Doesn't affect the car at all, just the dials!
