Hi all

Back in Jan I asked a question about what the fluctuating temp readings on my K-Series engined Elise S2 might mean. Most of you who replied suggested the dreaded HGF. I promised to update the topic when I had a definitve answer but alas, it's been deleted. So...

Took the car to the specialist, and they did a sniffer test on the cooling system. Nothing untowards for quite a long time running the engine, but then the colour of the liquid changed from deep blue to a greeny-yellow - combustion gases in the coolant system.

So, yes, it's the beginning of HGF, very early stages, so I need to get the HGF replaced. Really pisses me off because I've really done my utmost to look after the engine, I never rag it, serviced like clockwork, maintained religiously between services, warmed up and cooled with care, and still the fricking HG goes. I am considering throwing this stupid Rover engine in the bin where it belongs and putting a Honda CTR engine in instead! No wonder Rover went bankrupt!

Thanks for a great forum! You rock!

Sorry to hear your HG's on the way out, but at least you've spotted it early, so shouldn't be anymore than a change to an upgraded one and dowels, and hopefully done for life.

As a suggestion, can you wait for a couple of weeks to have the job done ? If so, then join the AA, and take out their parts and labour warranty. After two weeks, as long as the car has a service history, you can claim £500 towards the HG replacement, at any VAT registered garage. You'll have an excess of £25 to pay towards the costs.
