Hey guys, 3rd day of ownership and my 1st problem. The lever thing below the gear knob seems to have become detached i.e. when you pull it it still wont go into reverse. Can feel the mechanism through the cover and managed to pull it up and get it in reverse and off the drive but I'm worried about getting stuck somewhere or the embarrassment of having to ask for a push. Has this happened to anyone? Easy fix?

Can't quite picture what bit you mean Andy, other than the gear stick !! It's an Elise right ? Main thing here is, "third day of ownership", I'd be taking it back. Mine is a bit sticky sometimes, getting into reverse, until warmed up, and I usually push the gear change through the forward gears first, then it usually drops into reverse. Linkage can become a bit sloppy, byt the yearly service usually sorts it.

On the 'yota 6 speed box, to get it in reverse you have to lift a colar on the gearstick to allow it to go into reverse - stops reverse being accidentally being selected.

It happened to me at 30,000 miles. If I remember correctly Simon at Brooke-Kensington told me that the cable had stretched. It was a cheap repair

I had it. The fix is no more than an hours labour at a dealer. Just involves glueing some sort ring back on, or something.

Cheers guys. I would take it back to the garage but I live in Newcastle and I got it from Cardiff so its a 650 mile round trip if I take it back. I might end up cheaper taking it local and getting it fixed myself.

I had the gear gator and suround apart in my Exige S so that I could fit the cabling for an AFR gauge and sensor.

Below the reverse selector inside the gator is a plastic collar which has a gromit bolt / screw that is screwed into a central pin / shaft inside the gearstick shaft, this is basically what is attached to the selector for reverse. The gromit screw is quite feeble as when I was putting back the head snapped off, so I replaced it with a bolt instead and just counter sunk the plastic collar.

I suspect that if your unable to select reverse it could well be that the gromit screw / bolt has come loose or broken....

Pop down to formula 1 in Newcastle, if its a simple job they can quite often squeeze you in.
