thinking about selling a private plate J2 EXG can anyone advise on approx values, also how much do dvla want for holding the plate on retention?

No idea but may be not as much as you think! H15 EXG was advertised for ages and went for less than £300 a month or so ago.

DVLA used to charge £105 for retention, may have changed a little due to VAT rise but I it won't be too far away from this.

I can confirm that DVLA still charge £105 for retention having done one only yesterday.

As I remember, it's an £80 one off fee to take it off the car, plus a £25 retention fee for the first year.
I had my plate 31 BB on retention for three years before I sold it, it cost me £25 a year for a new retention doc.
All a rip off IMO.
