Under the Spell ! !
Discussion
Hello ladys and Gents,
Im new to this and have been cast under the spell of the Elise! (not much of a suprise). Im looking to get an elise in the next few months and after reading through local papers, autotrader etc i have, noticed there are alot of variations of the elise.
All i really know about the elise is its AMAZING in its old form (S1) and the new form (S2). As for the different models, specifications i dont really know much at all.
i dont want to rush into getting any old car, but its top of my spending list!
Any help you all can give me will be greatly appreciated!

In my experience go for the most powerful elise you can afford. They vary from a standard 118bhp up to 190bhp. If you go for a less powerful model you will only end up spending more money modifying it to get those extra bhp's!
The elise has always been considered underpowered for its capabilities. However go for a 111s and you shouldnt be dissapointed.
Try out as many variations as you can to see what you like. Look at the classic S1 and compare the newer versions of the S2 to compare "luxuries". There is some rubbish out there, but you will find some gems as lotus owners tend to be pretty fanatical about their toys.
Its always been my dream car and it has far exceeded my expectations.
Hope this helps.

i agee. i didnt rush in but bought a pristine S1 standard engine car with lots of shiny etras on and hard top but no wish i knew more about the other models before buying. not that i am disapointed but more power would be nice. look for a 111S or you will end up modifying or changing again once you have got used to the car. then it gets costly!!!!

try www.elises.co.uk for lots of info
echo the above - a 111S (S1 or S2) is a nice amount of power for an Elise - with a few mods (usual bolt ons)you can see 155-165bhp
buy the best you can afford - dont worry too much about mileage, but look for a well maintained, enthusiast owned car with a service history from a good specialist or dealer

Thanks for the help every1.
im more inclined to go for an S2. im into the whole engineering thing so servicing and all that good stuff i might look at doing myself. or easy stuff anyhow. have seen a few Racetec versions for sale. what is racetec and is it a standard thing lotus did? i havent a clue. im looking to spend between £15k-£17k might be able to strech a to a tad more.
the other thing i was wondering about was insurace. what group are the S2's and does anyone specialise in lotus or that sort of thing.

Race -tech is a stripped out version of the basic elise. Sports Tourer has more in the car in terms of "luxuries". It has 2 more speakers and carpets!
It depends what you want the car for. is it going to be used as a fun second car or used more often? If its for infrequent use it doesnt matter which option you go for. But if used more often go for the sport tourer.
Go for an S2 111s Sports tourer and you should be happy. If its got a sports exhaust then that will save money as you will want one sooner or later.
Insurance group is 19 (maybe less for earlier models) and I'm with Elephant.

The race tech has a good few 'extras over the standard car - sort of a half way house between that and the sports tourer.
It includes stuff like bits of aluminium inside, checker floor mats, mud flaps, cross drilled discs, driving lamps, an alarm and sill protection.
New they were about £3k over the standard and not much less than the tourer think about £500.
For the basic car insurance group is 17 (tesco are OK if you are not going for limited milage and have a tracker £400)

Check out
www.elises.co.uk/models/s2/options.html
It list all the of all the S2 models at launch. The sport tourer is the one to go for I reckon.

I think the things that make the difference are the extra speakers & carpet, which just makes life a little more relaxing. The alcantara or leather is just a taste thing do you like slippy or grippy?
The £500 difference was on the original list price today a s/h S2 starts around £17500 plus a bit for a Racetech plus a bit more for a Tourer. I think finding a clean one in budget is most important.
Engine sizes yes and no you can get them with different degrees of tuning (more bhp = less reliable/more rebuilds - but straight line speed will never be fantastic - its more ‘adequate’ to keep in touch until you leave them up at the next bend (on a track of course).
