Elise reliability
Discussion
A colleague of mine at work really wants an Elise, but she has heard that the reliability may be questionable.
As a Tiv owner I'm aware that the minority of people who do have reliability problems are usually those who make themselves heard, and so a simple statement obviously doesn't tell the whole story!
I would therefore appreciate an objective view of an Elise's reliability, particularly whether there are any models/years/features that should perhaps be avoided when choosing one. Any particular problems to look out for, eg leaking ragtops? Presumably buying from a dealer would give more peace of mind unless you really knew what to look for.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Have a look at www.elise-faq.info, there is a buying guide, also look at www.elises.co.uk . . .
Buy as late a model (newest car) as you can, especially S1 . . .

apart from minor niggles (like window rattles) real reliability problems are to do with the engine- so she should get a 111R with toyota reliability- notably the car is FAR more civilised than even a S2 111s and would be a perfect car for a female enthusiast (my wife, 26yo, thinks our s2 111s is fun in small doses, but on a recent test drive of a 111r commented on how much quiter, and more comfortable it was- with touring pack).
Have no fear julianc,
I run a S1 sport160 and drive her every day, regular servicing is all that has been needed.
If you are not buying new, get an inspection from a decent independent. Also bear in mind that there are service parts that do fail through time but a good lotus specialist will pick these up.
I've had lots of fun in mine and would recommend to anyone, who accepts the practicality trade off when compared more mundane motors.
