S2 window jamming
Discussion
OK as an end to my window woes I decided to do the job myself as for the 97th time I got someone else to do it – they failed to sort it for longer than 500 miles!
Also thought I would log it on here, as apparently it’s a common problem on the S2.
Symptoms are the door begins to rattle followed by the window refusing to wind up or down.
Take it in and a dealer will charge you anything from £40 – £200 to fix (real prices that thankfully I have always been able to avoid paying via warranty).
Its not obvious what is wrong so you strip the door and fiddle? The scissor mechanism is fixed to the door by 5 bolts and 2 behind the winder – check that all are in place first.
If all appears to be well, it is now highly likely that one or both of the window guides have worked loose (stick you hand in the door and wiggle them to check). They are only held at the top by a single countersunk screw which will have come loose possibly allowing the window to jump its tracks.
To put them back all is needed is to wiggle the glass and wind it back in to the door (possibly the most difficult bit) then remove the one-piece rubber window seal.
The very top of the track is where the counter sunk screw is – drip a blob of thread seal on it and screw it back in place!
Check the window is still on its track and bung it all back together – should only take 20 min.
If the window is not on the track (obvious as it comes out of the door at the wrong angle) you will have to remove the 3 bolts to the door not at the winder (marking the position of the 2 adjustable ones first) and play until you get it back on the tracks).
Finally you may need to adjust the window to seal gap - this is by the two screws at the bottom of the tracks visible on the bottom of the door.
Tools needed a medium Philips driver, and ¼ drive metric socket set, and alan key.
Enjoy !
