You probably know this already, but I've been informed that the recommended cambelt change period for an Elise has just been reduced from five years to four years, even for the S1.
Might be worth bearing in mind...

Interesting, I thought the belt was due after six years with schedule being AABAACAABAAC?? Which means a new cambelt after six years or 54,000 miles.

My car is six this time round and the belts is due this time (the garage wrote it on the last service invoice) even though the mileage is only 6k.

I have one of my really stupid views on this....i am at 30k (and 6 yrs) and probly better off with a new cambelt...stay with me! i can here the zzzzz,s....i figure i may as well put a set of piper 270,s in at the same time... these will run ok till credit card allows a new ecu n get the most out of em........then if i want it the head reworked???
is this the way forward or am i aed about backward as usual?

drunken ideas and post should be banned! how tight am i just to save money i spend it

Don't know I'm afraid. It does sound a bit funny, but a Lotus mechanic I know told me this. Unless he just wants to change my cambelt...

Cambelts deteriorate with age, milage and contamination from things like oil/antifreeze . . .

Getting someone to change the belt ahead of time is a sensible precaution, especially if you track the car . . .

Lobbing on some 270's at the same time as a belt change is a good idea ;-)

I happen to have a pair of 270's and verniers from my car kicking about in the garage if you're interested . . . from when I did exactly this !

Halfway through changing mine. Been in there 6 years, 45k miles, 20 odd track days, belt looks perfect except for being slightly shiny on the back.

I ran 2 belts on my VW to 60K miles, both still looked fine when they came out. Just done wife's Clio, also 45K over 6 years, again, old belt came out perfect. Makes me think early failures are down to contamination or damage. Elise belt is fully enclosed so unless you have an oil leak should be safe.

4 years is daft IMHO ... with dealer prices 2 belt changes buys you a new engine!

should cost around £350 at a specialist...or Rover dealer for £200 !

I do mine every 36K miles - heard too many stories of them going early...not too bad if you have a std engine and can replace it for £1500...if youve got £7K spent on your engine putting out 200bhp+ then Id do it more often

Is there a risk of the car underfuelling and hence overheating at high revs if you fit performance cams without tweaking the engine management?
