Got a small chip on the screen of my S1. Although I have windscreen cover, I'm a bit apprehensive about getting a claims record for the sake of a few quid. (Not the NCD, but a record)

They sell repair kits on e-bay for less than a tenner.......worth a go or a complete waste of time and money?

Most windscreen repairs under your insurance policy cost nowt, and I believe they don't affect your claims record at all. The insurer would rather pay a few quid for the fix than a replacement.

I had 2 chips in my vx screen and asked a chap parked up outside a supermarket to do them, as my insurance company wasn't on the list he said no as he couldn't guarantee getting payment. I asked how much he'd do them for cash and he did both for £10.

Desperate, or he's having it away behind his employer's back.

Apart from the next-to-nothing cost, are you pleased with the results or has he convinced you that "it's the best you're gonna get" ??

Perfect finish, the one smaller one I can't even see where it was. The larger one is very good, you can't feel where it is but can see a blemish.

Ok. It may be they were easy repairs, or it might not be as perfect to the professional. Bottom line is, you're happy.

A stonechip repair should never cost £10. The industry average is around 40-50 quid.

Yes I'm happy smile It was a Polish chap in a rusty old transit, think it just had "Winscreen Repairs" stenciled down the side. It wasn't in the supermarket car park, but in a layby on an approach rd.

I wouldn't say I have conclusive proof, more a gut feeling - and there is a thread on SELOC where someone has been refused cover due to too many windscreen claims.

I bought a repair kit on-line and have used it on various vehicles.

Follow the instructions carefully (which means moving the vehicle into/out of direct sunlight IIRC)

The results were much better than i expected.

Small chips/star cracks totally eliminated. Bigger chips massively reduced.

i would recommend the product i used, (although i can't remember which brand it was and i dont have the packaging to hand)

Pretty much teh result I'd have expected had it been done professionally,m but teh kit cost me £10 and i could do many a windscreen.
