I was thinking on the way to work this morning that I've had my Elise for nearly three years now, and maybe it's time for a change of scene. I quite fancy having an S2 111S.

But is it worth the hassle of selling my current car, and finding a temporary runabout to use whilst I save up the £7-10k needed to finance the upgrade?

Hmmm?

The runabout would probably depreciate faster than the Elise, unless you bought an absolute heap! and unless you get a diesel it probably won't be as economical either! Now if only servicing was cheap!

No.

I have consedered changing my S1 to an S2 but at the end of the day it would cost me another £6k minimum and it wouldnt put any bigger smile on my face than my current car.

Stick with what you've got, it's a classic.

Totally agree with the above.

Now is not the time to sell, S1 values are levelling off. Keep the S1 as your runabout, start saving.

In a couple of years time the S1 will have lost another 2k, while the S2 111S will have lost 5 or 6k. A considerable reduction in the cost of upgrade. Better still keep the S1 and save up for an Exige as a second car in a few years time

Regards, Neil

Don't do it - just seen your pic on profile. It's too good to let go and you'll lose more on the s2 depreciation.

Hang on for a bit until prices level off after the R versions have been around a bit longer.

If you fancy a change of scene maybe a change of model if not marque is required?

What about an Esprit - still get the Chapman effect but get cosseted. Otherwise 911, Noble?

I wouldn't swap your S1 for an S2 - it'll depreciate more and won't be all that different either.

Nice idea cuzza but 911, Esprit and Noble are WAYYY out of my budget! I'm a tight bastard and couldn't cope with the servicing costs of any of them even if I could afford them in the first place!

So it looks like I should follow my head and not my heart and stay with Kylie. I just wish she was a little more... refined.

Kylie?? Is that a reference to the rump of the S1??

Go for it - a cheep run around that has fully depriciated will cost next to nothing. But only sensible if your S1 still has outstanding debt.

Other wise save and spend I cant see your S1 depriciating faster than you can save.

S2 - they are a good car and lots more practical for day to day use (what the S1 should have been - waits for flames).

Not sure I'd bother personally, but thats just me. How about a different side of the automotive envelope like an M5 or something? Crap if you like track days, but otherwise an interestingly different side of the coin.

aside from a better roof on the late s2 models, and air-con I don't think a slighly lower sill height makes the S2 that much more civilised than an S1- they are both spartan.

Wait longer and get an R model.. for a real improvement in civility/reliability!

Cheers all. Cuzza, yes, the rump of the car had an influence in the name I gave it!

Dan, you're spot on there, the M5 is the only car that could draw me away from Lotus at the moment!
