Does anybody know if the battery would be covered by warranty? Mine appears to be dead in my 14 month old Elise...

I doubt it, batteries would probably be classed as consumables.

On the subject of batteries - anyone used heard of the smaller light weight battery. Is it much smaller and does it work and what does it cost?

Nope - I argued with the dealer and with Lotus after mine packed up. A year old, and it wouldn't hold a charge after it went totally flat.

Apparently the battery is one of the consumables, like oil or brake pads.

Doesn't the battery itself have a guarantee? Most of them seem to have 3 to 5 years now. Worth checking with the manufacturer

Definitely worth checking, i had my bike battery replaced a couple of months ago under the manufacturer warranty, not the Yamaha one.
