after 3 years of faultless ownership the alarm appears to have gone a bit haywire. I set it and left it as usual, and then got a call to say it was randomly going off. Assumed it had been tampered with /jostled at some point....but then it did the same thing again last night when safely in the garage with nothing but other cars for company.....

Any thoughts anyone?

Check the bonnet and boot switches, open them one at a time and see if the alarm sets properly.

Then close the car up and check the internal microwave sensor, arm the alarm with the big button on the remote then press the small button straight afterwards this should arm the alarm and turn the interior sensor off, and see if the false alarm re-occurs.

Then again that last post is probably completely useless as I have an S1 with a Cobra alarm whereas the newer S2 has a different alarm system.

doh!

- but it was quality, detailed, and undoubtedly extremely useful information!

Not sure if it's the same alarm or not, but the VX alarm system is prone to being set off by cordless doorbells...

When you arm the alarm do you get any beeps? Mine was a bit dodgy and the guy at sinclares noticed that it was beeping 4 times when I set the alarm which apparently means the interior light is in the wrong position. After he flicked it into the right position it's been fine.

It's possible the contacts in the door / boot switches have become slightly corroded. Open 'em up and have a look, you can buff them back to working order with emery paper.
