Sounds like the piece of metal that directs the airflow has come adrift. If you undo the bonnet and look in you will see apiece of silver tubing about 100mm diameter joining the back of the dash. Pull this off and reach up into the dash. If like me you will find a piece of alluminium about 75mm*50mm. Feel around and there is one channel that goes to the footwells and the other goes to the dash air vents. The piece of metal directs the airflow and should be attached to a shaft that rotates. Whack some araldite on the edge and glue in place being careful to make sure you only glued the edge to the shaft not the rest of the car, which is surprisingly easy to do. Could also be related to the cable that turns the shaft from the heater controls???
Hope you get the drift
